Overview: The Arc of Howard County is seeking a CNA who assists in providing personal care under the direction of nursing, to individuals with developmental disabilities in a residential support program. Included with CNA experience we are seeking a Direct Support Manager to provide oversight to a predetermined number of sites and Direct Support Professionals. The CNA/DSM will be the primary contact for staff and family members of the people being supported. They will work with Arc staff to ensure that the services being provided are excellent and exceed agency standards. The CNA/DSM is familiar with the agency mission, agency standards of support and participates in the betterment of the organization.


  • Work in conjunction with Nurse Manager to perform duties essential to the operation of the assigned site.
  • Bathes & dresses & undresses individuals.
  • Turns and repositions individuals, alone or with assistance, to prevent bedsores.
  • Transports individuals or assists individuals to walk.
  • Changes bed linens, runs errands, directs visitors, and answers telephone.
  • Dusts and cleans individuals' room. Performs routine household maintenance/cleaning duties
  • Interacts with individuals to reinforce positive behaviors and to promote social interaction.
  • Provide a positive, safe, & clean homelike living environment designed to meet the specific needs of the individuals residing in the home.
  • Follow, carry out and enforce agency polices and program procedures.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service trainings.
  • Responsible for completion of all required trainings and certifications within 3 months of hire. Responsible for maintaining required annual training re-certifications.
  • Assists & trains individuals in preparation of nutritious well-balanced meals, or serves nutritious well-balanced meals.
  • Transports individuals by driving an agency vehicle, which may include operation of wheelchair lift and tie downs.
  • Accompanies individuals on shopping trips and instructs and counsels individuals in purchase of personal items, groceries, gifts, etc...
  • Observes and documents individual's behaviors, such as speech production, feeding patterns, and toilet training, to facilitate assessment and development of goals.
  • Ensures neat & clean appearance of individuals, train & supervise clean personal hygiene skills, clothing care to include cleanliness, style, & fit.
  • Utilize behavior management techniques as outlined in Individual Plans.
  • Maintain individual's records, files and complete required forms and documentation.
  • Providing management, coaching and oversight of Direct Support Professional's working at their sites.
  • Developing staff schedules and approving timecards for staff in their work sites.
  • Using person-centered practices when assisting people to make informed choices, develop strategies and take risks.
  • Assist with the implementation of the person-centered plan to achieve specific outcomes derived from the person's preferences, needs and interests.
  • Assist in the management of financial accounts (participant bills, petty cash, etc.)


  • MD State CNA Certification from the Board of Nursing
  • Valid Maryland driver's license with no more than 3 points
  • Acceptable Background and Drug Screen
    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Computer Literacy (Including Microsoft Office Suite and the use of Google Mail and Carematic)
  • Ability to successfully complete all DDA, Arc of Howard County and MBON required trainings
  • Ability to manage time effectively
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • Ability to lift 25-30 lbs.
